What’s your time worth?

What's your time worth?[Image]

As a marketing consultant and ahem… entrepreneur, I have truly learned that time is money. Coming from a handsomely paid corporate job before going solo, I knew this intellectually. I traded my time for a regular pay cheque so I can pay my bills, live a good life and buy pretty things. When I decided to leave the high life and live creatively, my income also resembled the doodles of an artist – abstract and unfocused. You never know what squiggle of an income you’ll get the next day. However, there is a purpose to this lifestyle change, so I persevere.

My friend Tal Gur reminded me that time is a non-renewable resource which we must spend wisely. So recently, I wrote an inventory of my time.

How much time do I spend doing things:

  1. that are essential to quality of life but does not generate an income like organising parties and holidays, cleaning the house (although this can therapeutic), etc.
  2. that I hate to do but help me run my business like filing, bookkeeping, managing my diary, maintaining my blogs
  3. that make me happy like cooking, writing, dancing and other creative pursuits
  4. that help me generate income and create wealth like building knowledge and skills  so I can add greater value to my clients’ businesses, investing, acting on opportunities and making things happen

I have successfully redirected more time and energy towards creative living (point 3) but boy do I spend way too much time on points 1 and 2.

The solution? Outsource.

And last week, I hired a PA – actually a virtual assistant who will help me get organised at home and in the office (which is kind of the same in my case)  and turn my focus on activities that a) create wealth / generate income  and b) enrich the quality of my life.

What about you? If it were possible for you to outsource aspects of your life, what would it be and what would you do with the “extra” time?

Getting published and writing bestsellers

I had lunch last week with a book publisher who has a very long string of bestsellers in his portfolio. He gave me the low down on the ins-and-outs at the larger publishing houses. So I had to ask the secrets to becoming a successful published author. He referred me to a website the name of which I can’t recall and it said this:

“The fact is that many are called to write; yet few make it to published author let alone bestsellers. Why? Because there is more involved than simply scribbling a cute story on some paper, and reading it, complete with voice and actions, to your kids, their friends and yours. After all, your kids and your friends will (mostly) love anything you write. Either that or they don’t want to hurt your feelings.”

And so I reflected upon the rave reviews my writing received from complete strangers in the US, South America, UK and other parts of Europe and Asia. They happened upon my work which featured on a few blogs nearly ten years ago when I wrote about love, life and relationships under a pseudonym. Two of my pieces were even translated into Spanish, Portuguese, French, Japanese and Chinese (yay!). When a publisher I knew at the time talked to me about a potential book deal, I just laughed.

Me? Write? About what?

It was a hobby and I was just glad people liked my words. Or that they bothered to read. I wasn’t trying to be clever nor did I agonise over every adjective, adverb, metaphor and simile to showcase my finesse with the written word. I didn’t write to please people or to get a following. Nor did I spend time on writers’ forums and cliques commenting on how fabulous other people’s work were so they would return the favour. I didn’t write merely for public consumption. It was very selfish actually. Because my audience was me.

Having said that, back in 1996, I  noticed a girl on the train reading the MX magazine. She was on the Flirt pages reading my column on “How do you like your eggs?” with a cheeky smile on her face. I observed the whole two minutes or so it took her to read the article. And I followed her eyes as she poured over every line. By the expressions on her face, I knew exactly where she was at. She chuckled under her breath and smiled furtively at the last line. I knew she enjoyed it. At least, I hoped so.

Publishing a book, however, is a completely different matter. It never really crossed my mind. “You mean I have to get into someone else’s head?”. Hard work. I can barely unravel mine.

It wasn’t even on my list of 30 things to do before I die.

My sister who is in psychiatry reckoned it was a self-esteem issue. I didn’t believe I was good enough. And she was probably right. I quietly thought I didn’t have a bestseller in me. Or at least one that’s worth binding into a pretty little book to be sold in Amazon and Borders.

Have I changed my mind? A little.

I’m the first to admit I’m not a good story teller. But surely, I have it in me to write a non-fiction. A book about everything I know that you don’t. I’ll have to work on that.

As I contemplated the idea, my book publisher friend chimed in, “Roby, the book publishing business is mostly luck.”

That’s OK. Since I quit my “job”, luck has been a very good friend.

Making things happen

Making things happen - Scott Berkun

It’s normal for me to juggle at least 5 different creative projects at a time, all of which I’m passionate about. Recently, I’ve been thinking about focusing on key projects and ideas I could realistically manage in the next 12 months. The trouble is choosing which ones.

I keep coming across the book Making Things Happen, an internationational best seller by former Microsoft insider Scott Berkun. In his book he talks about how to make things happen, how to manage ideas, how to figure out what to do and what to do when things go wrong. Scott makes project management almost, well… sexy.

Making things happen - Scott Berkun

I haven't read all of it yet but I'm already loving the chapter that talks about what to do when things go wrong.

  • Always stay calm
  • Evaluate the problem
  • Get the right people in the room
  • Explore alternatives
  • Make the plan really, really simple
  • Make it happen

Nothing has gone wrong so far in any of my projects. But I won't wait until something does. So today, I'm culling my project list.

Still my problem remains, which ones?

I still need to read the chapter on how to manage ideas and figure out what to do.

Go ahead. Order your copy of Making Things Happen by Scott Berkun and tell us what you think.

ebooks, information and the number 7.

I’ve been spending a lot of time researching the voluminous information products available  on the Internet sold as ebooks, podcasts, videos, webinars and newsletters.

From fat burning ebooks and videos, height improvement guides that help the vertically-challenged add  inches to their height regardless of age, dating advice that promise to deliver the man (or woman) of one’s dreams, to Internet money-making secrets that claim to turn one into a multi-millionaire overnight.

All for a no-brainer price that usually ends in 7  – $37, $47, $87, $97, $197, $497, $997, $4,997 (apparently because the number 7 tends to sell more).

While there are reputable operators around (if you look hard enough), there are ten times as many who deliver information products that often read like personal rants dominated by ambiguous and motivational style content lacking real practical information with depth and substance.

And then there are the “scammers” who promise fame and fortune. Guaranteed.

I don’t have tell you, it’s more than likely a false claim.

So, I’ve decided to start a project on a topic I know very well.

Over the next few months, I’ll be blogging about it and sharing my journey, warts and all, with you.

Stay tuned.

Domain Names To Make You Rich… Eventually.

Domain Names

I have to be honest. Domain names bore the heck out of me. But the things is, though they may not be the sexiest things in the world if you’re lucky enough to find a good one, it will change your life. Literally. Just ask the guy who sold business.com in 1999. Oh that’s right, he’s out of range sailing somewhere in the Pacific on a multi-million dollar, fully-crewed yacht. But I digress…

I wrote a blog in 2007 about the importance of creating a good domain name that is both memorable and improves one’s chances of attracting qualified website traffic. Even in those days, good domains especially in .com were already scarce, snapped up by early internet adopters as well as savvy entrepreneurs who traded domain names at jaw-dropping price tags.
